JAKARTA (Reuters) – A strong earthquake of magnitude 6.6 struck off the Indonesian island of Java on Friday, prompting some residents in the capital, Jakarta, to flee buildings in panic, the meteorological agency said.

The Indonesian Meteorological Agency said the quake struck 52 kilometers off Banten province at a depth of 10 kilometers, but it did not issue a tsunami warning. The volume was initially reported at 6.7 but has been reduced to 6.6.

There were no immediate reports of injuries and BMKG warned people to stay at home, after five aftershocks were recorded, the strongest of which reached 5.7.

“From inside the house, it felt like a truck was going through,” BMKG President Dwikorita Karnawati said in a press conference broadcast live.

Reuters witnesses said residents in Jakarta felt strong tremors for more than a minute.

Indonesia is located on both sides of the so-called “Pacific Ring of Fire”, which is a very seismically active region, where different plates meet on the Earth’s crust and cause a large number of earthquakes and volcanoes.

“I was very scared and suddenly there was an earthquake and it was very strong,” said nanny Annie, 38, who uses only one name.

“When I felt this, I grabbed my employer’s baby straight and ran downstairs.”

Another resident, Ade, 34, was on the 15th floor of Banten’s apartment.

“I was at the Zoom meeting when people all shouted ‘Earthquake!'” said Addy, who declined to give her second name. “.

“The tremors were so strong I was in shock, I couldn’t get off right away, I needed to stabilize my body.”

The quake was also felt in West Java and Lampung provinces on Sumatra island.

The agency said it had received initial reports of damage in Pandeglang in Banten, but did not provide further details.

Speaking to the Kompas TV channel, Banten Governor Wahiduddin Halim said four houses were damaged, an Islamic school collapsed and cracks appeared in a mosque.

Last month, a 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck the east of the country, triggering a tsunami warning and prompting residents to flee their homes but only causing minor damage.
