4.9-magnitude earthquake strikes Kayseri, Turkey

The Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) announced that a 4.9-magnitude earthquake struck central Turkey’s Kayseri province at 2.28 am today (January 18). The Kandilli Observatory of Boğaziçi University and the Earthquake Research Institute first reported the earthquake’s magnitude as 5.1, and then revised it as 4.9.

According to the Disaster and Emergency Management statement, the quake occurred at a depth of 23.75 kilometers and was felt by residents in neighboring provinces as well.

According to the state-run Anadolu Agency (AA), the earthquake in Sari Ocalan district of Kayseri caused damage to some houses and barns. The AA stated that the damage assessment will begin soon. Kayseri Governor Şehmus Günaydın also posted a brief message on his social media account and announced that “all teams are on the field.”

Kayseri Mayor Mamdouh Buyuklic also published a message declaring that “they have not received any negative reports yet.”

Speaking to AA after carrying out checks in Sarıoğlan district, the epicenter of the earthquake, Sarıoğlan Mayor Bekir Ayyıldırm said that “there are no emergencies or loss of life or property,” adding that there were some cracks in some houses and damage to some barns.

AVAD Regional Director Osman Atsiz also announced that there were no casualties in the earthquake. Noting that the damage assessment work will start in the morning, Atsiz said that four teams appointed by the Disaster and Emergency Management Department came from Nevsehir, Aksaray and Ankara provinces and are working in Kayseri province with the support of various institutions.

He pointed out that “two people who were afraid of the earthquake were transferred to the Bunyan General Hospital, and they are in good health.” (SD)
