Two earthquakes hit Afghanistan, killing at least 27

Two earthquakes struck a remote mountainous region in western Afghanistan, killing at least 27 people and destroying hundreds of homes, officials said Tuesday.

Baz Muhammad Sarwari, a spokesman for the governor of Badghis province near the border with Turkmenistan, said the earthquakes occurred on Monday after three days of heavy rain, leaving brick houses vulnerable along the mountain slopes.

Sarwari said hundreds of homes were destroyed in poor areas in the Kadis district in the southern part of the province. Men, women and children were killed, many of them inside the buildings.

Azmatullah Sharifi, a resident of the affected area, said by phone that the death toll will likely rise significantly, because many families are still buried under the rubble.

Rescue teams have been sent to the affected areas. Pictures taken by residents and provided by Sarwari showed men and boys using their bare hands to remove mud bricks and other rubble, apparently in an attempt to reach any survivors trapped among the rubble.

The first quake occurred just after 2 p.m. local time, east of Qala Naw, the capital of a province overrun by the Taliban in July on its way to capturing Kabul in August. Its magnitude recorded 4.9, according to the US Geological Survey. The second hit about two hours later 6 miles away, registering a magnitude of 5.3.

The quakes were felt across the province on Monday afternoon, officials said, causing damage as far away as E-Nau Castle.

For civilians in Afghanistan, the earthquakes have added to the misery of living in a years-long war. Data from the US Geological Survey has shown that several earthquakes have occurred in recent weeks along Afghanistan’s eastern borders with Pakistan and Tajikistan. Most were a size 5 or less.

The 2015 earthquake killed more than 300 people in northern Afghanistan and Pakistan. And a similar case in the same area, 24 years ago, led to a similar number of deaths.
