No tsunami warning raised as 6.6-magnitude earthquake hits Japan coast

Early on January 22, a strong earthquake offshore shook Oita and Miyazaki Prefectures in southern Japan, causing minor injuries among the stunned people but no major damage except for ruptured water pipes.

However, the earthquake caused interruption of service on the Kyushu Shinkansen Express and many local lines, particularly Oita Prefecture.

According to a Meteorological Agency official, the epicenter of the quake was in the Hyujanada Sea, which is part of the Nankai Trough, a depression of about 4 km on the sea floor stretching 700 km from Suruga Bay in Shizuoka Prefecture to places off eastern Kyushu. .

Shinya Tsukada, director of JMA’s Seismic and Tsunami Monitoring Division, said the earthquake occurred much deeper than the expected focus of the Nankai Trough earthquake at the continental and oceanic plate boundaries.
