Second minor earthquake within hours rocks northern Israel; Some buildings have been evacuated
A slight earthquake shook northern Israel on Sunday afternoon, sending some residents into the streets during the region’s second earthquake in a matter of hours.
The Israeli Geological Survey said the 3.5-magnitude earthquake occurred just after midday, with its epicenter 16 kilometers southeast of the city of Tiberias.
Police said there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage, and no warnings of disturbances at sea.
A series of fault lines runs along the Red Sea, the Dead Sea, and the Jordan Valley, causing geological activity in the area.
In Beit She’an, staff were evacuated from the town hall as part of standard procedures during the earthquake. A school in nearby Afula was also evacuated.

A Beit She’an resident, who was not named, told the Walla news site that they were concerned that a larger earthquake might occur on the way.
“We felt a short earthquake just like it during the night. We left the building and waited a few minutes. They said it was very surprising that there was another earthquake and there is concern that a bigger one might happen soon.

A Nazareth resident told Channel 12 that the earthquake was “strongly felt”.
The quake came just hours after a minor earthquake earlier struck northern Israel late Saturday night.
The Israel Geological Survey said a 3.7-magnitude earthquake began at 11:36 p.m. Saturday. The epicenter of the quake was about 19 kilometers northeast of Beit She’an, near Israel’s border with Jordan.
“It went on for a relatively long time. It moved things in my house,” a Haifa resident told Walla after the first earthquake. “My desk was moving on its own for four or five seconds. The whole house shook, the bed, the room. ”
My whole body was trembling with fear. I started grabbing my kids out. The bed really moved. “All the windows were shaking,” said a woman from Tiberias.

On Sunday, authorities reminded residents of earthquake protocols, while telling anyone who might be in danger to head outdoors.
Persons unable to leave the building must enter their bomb-proof safe room, leaving doors and windows open, or enter the stairwell and descend. If neither of these options is available, then it should take cover in the corner of the room.
Those who were outdoors at the time of the earthquake should stay away from buildings, trees, power cables, and any objects that might fall.
Anyone close to shore should stay at least 1 km from the water, or ensure they are on the fourth floor or higher in the event of a flood or tsunami.
Anyone who was driving at the time of the earthquake should stop at the side of the road and wait inside the vehicle until the earthquake has ended, but should avoid stopping under a bridge or at an intersection.
Earlier this month, a 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Cyprus. It was felt by Israel, Lebanon and neighboring Turkey.
Israel lies along an active fault line: the Syrian-African Fault, a crack in the Earth’s crust that runs along the border separating Israel and Jordan. The last major earthquake to hit the area was in 1927 – a 6.2-magnitude earthquake that killed 500 people and injured 700 – and seismologists estimate that such earthquakes occur in this area about every 100 years.
In 2018, the state ombudsman warned that Israel was not at all prepared for a major earthquake.
Urgent story telling
During a global pandemic, a very small country is producing research that helps guide health policy around the world. How effective are COVID-19 vaccines? After the first two shots, does the third dose help? How about the fourth?
When The Times of Israel started covering COVID-19, we had no idea our little cadence would become such an essential part of the global story. Who knew Israel would be first at nearly every turn of the vaccination story — and generating much-needed research today?
Our team has covered this story with the rigor and accuracy that characterizes Times of Israel reporting across topics. If it is important to you for the existence and prosperity of this type of media organization, I urge you to support our work. Will you join the Times of Israel community today?
