The tremor at Mount Aegean in East Java leads to an isolated tsunami, killing one – a citizen

A sulfur miner was killed when volcanic activity in Mount Aegean in East Java released toxic gases and sparked a 3-meter-long wave in a natural lake located inside the crater Friday afternoon.

Kompass.com reported that the earthquake occurred inside the mountain at 12:30, which resulted in toxic air and isolated wave from the lake in the hole.

According to the Indonesian expert tsunami, Wedjo Konko, the wave that formed in the wake of volcanic activity recorded on Friday was described as a tsunami.

He said that a tsunami usually occurs when activities on the ocean floor, bay, or lake disturb the water column on the surface.

“[A tsunami] May be caused by earthquake, landslide, or volcanic activity. “The phenomenon recorded in the lake inside the crater of Mount Aegean is an example of a tsunami,” Wedjo said on Monday.

He went on to say that the wave that occurred on Friday was known among the experts as a fork.

Wedjo said: “Water fluctuations or tremors resulting from tremors are within the category of shish.”

He explained that many lakes, such as Lake Toba in North Sumatra and Lake Poso in central Sulawesi, were formed after a series of volcanic events similar to those that occurred on Mount Aegean.

Wedjo called on East Java Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) to conduct research into volcanic activities in the region and formulate strong mitigation plans, such as establishing early warning systems, to prevent further losses and damages if it occurs.

“The development of a tourist destination around any lake must be carried out in accordance with the principles of disaster reduction,” he said.

Mount Aegean is famous among tourists for the turquoise lake of sulfur, in addition to the natural phenomenon called “blue fire”.

According to experts, the blue fire is caused by sulfur gas igniting in the crater when it appears and comes into contact with air without producing smoke. (rfa)
