There is no threat of tsunami from strong earthquake near Puerto Rico

According to the National Weather Service’s Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (NWS-PTWC) in Honolulu, Hawaii, there is no danger of a tsunami from a moderate earthquake that struck near Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands (USVI) a short time ago. At 7:53 p.m. ET, a magnitude 4 earthquake struck approximately 28 miles northwest of San Antonio, Puerto Rico at a depth of 10 km.

The earthquake prompted the NWS-PTWC’s Tsunami Bulletin to say that there is no threat of a tsunami at this time. “Based on all available data, there is no tsunami risk for Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands or the British Virgin Islands from this earthquake,” NWS-PTWC said in its post. They added that people may have been shaken by the earthquake.

The NWS-PTWC wrote: “This will be the only statement issued for this event unless additional data is received or the situation changes.” “Information regarding the tsunami threat to the US Atlantic Gulf coasts will be released by the US National Tsunami Warning Center.”

The area has been seismically active recently, with the USGS reporting more than 55 earthquakes around Puerto Rico in the past seven days with a magnitude of 2.5 or greater. While today’s earthquake was the strongest this week in Puerto Rico, 4.3 struck the northwest corner of Haiti earlier today as well.

These earthquakes are not far from the epicenter of the powerful earthquake that struck in January 2020.
