On January 24, 2022, Haiti was hit by an earthquake of magnitude 5.6 at approximately 8:00 am and had a depth of 10 km.

The day before, two additional earthquakes were reported, one around 6:00 a.m. with a magnitude of 4.3, and the other around 11:45 p.m., with a magnitude of 4.0.

This news comes just days after the anniversary of the deadly 2010 earthquake that killed more than 250,000 people.

What happened in 2010?

On January 12, 2010, a large-scale earthquake struck Haiti on the island of Hispaniola in western India shortly before 5 pm.

And while the quake itself lasted only 30 seconds, the quake was felt as far away as Cuba and Venezuela.

It recorded a magnitude of 7.0 and was also exposed to eight aftershocks on the same day.

Overall, the earthquake had at least 52 aftershocks recorded over the next two weeks, according to the History Channel.

The earthquake destroyed 300,000 buildings beyond repair and displaced a million people.

It was impossible to establish an exact death toll but the Haitian government estimated that more than 316,000 died as a result.
