Two earthquakes shook southern Haiti; Two deaths have been reported

Two moderate earthquakes rocked southwestern Haiti on Monday, killing two people and damaging homes as it caused panic and pushed schools and businesses to close.

The 5.3-magnitude quake was at 8:16 a.m. (1316 GMT), followed by a 5.1-magnitude quake about an hour later. Both were centered on the southern Haiti Peninsula, west of the capital, Port-au-Prince, according to the US Geological Survey. She added that both were centered at a depth of ten kilometers below the surface.

Haiti’s Civil Protection Agency said at least two people were killed and two more injured, while at least 35 homes were reported to have been damaged.

Yves Boss, an elected official for the southern county of Nieps, told The Associated Press that one person died when the quake triggered a landslide in a sand mine. He also said that many homes were cracked and that shops were closed today.

“People are afraid to go home,” he said.

Silvera Guillam, director of Haiti’s Civil Protection Agency for the southern region of the country, told The Associated Press that schools in the area have also closed and children sent home as a precaution.

A 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck southwest Haiti on August 14, killing more than 2,200 people and damaging or destroying about 137,500 homes.
