It appears that the city of Wajin was the epicenter of the earthquake that shook the city at 5.24 am today.

A 4.7-magnitude earthquake has been confirmed by the Australian Geosciences National Earthquake Alert Center (NEAC).

“Compared to countries near tectonic plate boundaries, Australia experiences fewer large earthquakes,” NEAC said.

Earthquakes in Australia are caused by the slow build-up of pressure in the interior of the continent, produced by the Australian tectonic plate moving about 7 centimeters to the northeast each year and colliding with neighboring tectonic plates.

“The Australian plate is the fastest moving continental mass on Earth, colliding with the Pacific plate to the north and east of Australia, and the Eurasian plate to the northwest.

“An earthquake occurs when rocks deep in the earth break and move along the fault line, releasing this pressure.

“While some parts of the country are more likely to experience earthquakes than others, large earthquakes can occur anywhere across the continent, and without warning.”

If an earthquake occurs, get down on your hands and knees and crawl under a sturdy table or next to an indoor wall, cover your head and neck, and continue until shaking stops, GEAC said.

Geoscience Australia’s NEAC uses a permanent network of more than 100 seismic stations across the country to detect and respond to Australian earthquakes 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

NEAC also alerts the Australian government to external earthquakes greater than 6.0 by drawing on additional real-time seismic data from more than 500 offshore seismometers, operated by various international observatories.
