Perth earthquake: A 4.7 magnitude earthquake strikes Westbelt rocks near Wagen

An earthquake measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale hit the southwestern city of Wagen shortly before 5.30 a.m. Tuesday.

Aftershocks were felt by people, including a 3.6-magnitude aftershock near the Arthur River and a 2.6-magnitude aftershock near Darkan.

The depth of the earthquake was about eight kilometres, according to Australian geosciences, and 518 sensory reports were recorded.

Wagin is a Wheatbelt town located 230 km southeast of Perth, famous for its giant ram “Bart” and the annual Woolarama event.

Shire President Philip Plaitt happily told the AAP that BART and the century-old buildings in the city had escaped damage.

“Now take a look at the giant ram in the Wagon to make sure he didn’t get any damage…it’s cool,” said Mr. Blitt.

“(My wife and I) were having breakfast and it built fairly quickly, it started and built fairly quickly to the max and it regressed.

“Maybe it wasn’t strong enough that I could see a plate or a knife or a fork moving on the table kind of didn’t. But yeah, just strong enough to realize what it was for sure.”

A 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck the Victorian town of Mansfield in September 2021.

In 2018, a 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck Muir Lake in southwestern Washington State.

In 1968, the town of Meekring was hit by a devastating 6.78 earthquake.
