Wagon earthquake: Damage reported in the Arthur River area after a 4.7 magnitude earthquake

The 4.7-magnitude earthquake that struck Wagen on Tuesday morning was the largest in a series of “crowd” earthquakes — but it may not be the last, according to a seismologist.

The quake hit the area at 5.24 a.m., sending tremors all the way through Perth to Albany, according to the federal government’s Geoscience Australia website.

More than 743 community reports have been issued about the earthquake, with many people reporting damage in the Arthur River region, said Tanya Bejic, chief seismologist at Geoscience Australia.

“That number has been going up. I’ve seen it go up and up, and go up since the earthquake,” Ms. Bejic said.

“There have been reports of damage but those reports have not been verified – which means we didn’t have the team there to verify.

“(Reports) are in the communities closest to the area, such as the Arthur River.”

Ms Bejic said that several earthquakes had been reported in the area over the past week, creating a “swarm”.

“There have been a lot of earthquakes in a very short period of time. Most of them were of magnitude 2 to 3, and we had a few more than three in the past week,” she said.

“We had three on Saturday alone, all over 3.5, and this (Wagin) is the biggest so far.

“What we see here is a swarm, with a series of large earthquakes that all have their own aftershocks.

There is no real global understanding of how swarms form, Bejic said.

The seismologist went on to say that what happens next is unpredictable, and it remains to be seen whether the Wajin earthquake is an escalation of all the tremors over the past weeks.

“In hindsight, two months from now, we can say ‘yes that was the escalation, or it wasn’t’ but at the moment we don’t know because there is a possibility of a bigger earthquake, or it could simply go away – we don’t know,” Ms Bejic said. .

Wagin Shire President Philip Plaitt said it felt a “disturbing start” and then “felt like a truck going past.”

“(The bang) built up and lasted long enough to know it was an earthquake,” Cr Blight said.

He said it was still a bit early to assess any initial damage, but he emphasized that the town had experienced smaller tremors in the past few weeks.

“We’ve had a series of smaller[tremors]over the past three weeks or so,” Cr Blight said.

“They were around the same area, kind of west of town, about the immensity.

“It was piling up so hopefully that’s the end of it.”

In excellent news for tourists, the huge Wagon ram is reported to be fine and survived the earthquake.

Cr Blight told The West Live that Bart was “still standing there in all his glory” on Tuesday morning.

Bart was built in 1985 and is visited by thousands of tourists every year.

Geoscience Australia recommends that those who experience an earthquake “fall down, cover up, and wait.”

“Get down to all fours so you don’t fall into the vibration. Cover your head with your hands, go under something sturdy—like a table—and hold on to it,” said Mrs. Bejek.
