Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Dave Dobbyn to open new Redcliffs School in Christchurch

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Kiwi Dave Dobbin will help celebrate the return of Redcliffs this month when she moves to her new $ 16 million campus.

The Christchurch school had to leave the main road site after the February 2011 earthquake. The site has been shared at the Van Asch Deaf Education Center in nearby Sumner since then.

Redcliffs School was almost closed in 2016, but then-Minister of Education Heikia Parata reversed her decision after a campaign by the school community.

On June 22, Redcliffs students will watch their new classrooms for the first time on the new Redcliffs Park site, and on June 25 Ardern and Dobbyn will attend the grand opening of the school.

Redcliffs Principal Rose McNerney is pleased to have the school move to her new location soon.

Redcliffs School students visited Parliament in 2018 and presented their story to Ardern at the gathering meeting. She was invited to the opening and said yes.

“We are really proud that Jacinda wants to come,” said school director Rose McKearney.

“I think she understands that it is a very special story and that returning our school to its community after nine years is very important after the battles that we went through and overcome many obstacles.”

Redcliffs School planned to open it at its new location on May 1, but the return was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. McNerney said that construction workers worked hard during working conditions after the closure, and there were “very few small things” to be completed.

The rebuilt Redcliffs School has 13 classes across five educational environments.

Woods, artwork and other souvenirs were rescued from the old building of the new site and children were consulted about what they wanted in their new school. An old-school bell, which was more than 100 years old, was also brought up.

McNerney said that the opening on June 22 and the grand opening on June 25 will be full of emotions for students, employees and the Redcliffs community.

McNerney, who was the deputy principal of the school when the 2011 earthquake struck and had been managing it since 2016, said she had never lost hope that the school would remain during difficult times.
