A guest article published in the New York Times on Tuesday predicted that President Biden could drag Democrats into a “political earthquake” after a poll found that in 2021 more Americans identify as Republicans than Democrats, for the first time in decades.

There was a significant difference in Democrats’ popularity in 2021 compared to the previous year, which Christopher Caldwell attributes in part to Biden. Gallup found that Republicans outperform Democrats in US party preferences by 47% compared to Democrats 42%.

According to Caldwell, “Since Gallup began counting party identity in 1991, Democrats have made an average of four points ahead.”

Biden appears to be simultaneously losing popularity with his party. A Quinnipiac poll in January put Biden’s approval at 33%, with a majority of Americans disappointed with the president’s handling of COVID-19, foreign policy and the economy. The poll reflects historical inflation, the withdrawal from Afghanistan and Biden’s failure to “eliminate the virus” as he promised during his 2020 election campaign.

Caldwell said Biden’s widely criticized comments in Atlanta, which compared those who oppose his election reform agenda to unsavory figures in American history, are politically toxic to Democrats.

“When…Biden told an Atlanta crowd this month that those who opposed the bill were on the same side as Alabama Governor George Wallace and Confederate President Jefferson Davis, arguably he was combining the condescension of Hillary Clinton’s 2016 “unfortunate” remark with Kind of baiting against the white race. That’s electorally dangerous,” Caldwell wrote.

Caldwell says Americans don’t buy the story Democrats are selling.

“Roughly since the murder of George Floyd in May 2020, Democrats have been telling a story about the country that focuses too much on race and the way on Donald Trump,” he wrote. “Trump’s obsession with Democrats has gone astray. They misunderstood what the former president represents for Americans who vote for Americans. … Trump has exploited smoldering grievances against various information economy elites and managers. There is no reason why ethnic minority voters cannot share some of these grievances.”
