Today marks 322 years since the last Cascadia earthquake. Are you ready for the Big One?
January 26 marks 322 years since the last Cascadia earthquake and tsunami struck the Pacific Northwest, the Oregon Office of Emergency Management reminds us. This week, Oregon Governor Kate Brown designated this “Cascadia Earthquake Preparedness Week” and urged Oregonians to prepare.
This occasion is as good a reason as any to ask yourself: Are you ready for the big event?
According to the Oregon Office of Emergency Management, “Scientists predict that the odds of a major earthquake in the CSZ over the next 50 years are about one in ten.”
Oregonian/OregonLive has regularly provided guides to prepare ourselves for emergencies, especially earthquakes. Here are nine ways to assess your preparedness and the things you can do now to prepare for an emergency.
Sign Up for Notifications: Sign up for Public Alerts, Citizen Alert, or a service in your county to be notified via text, call or email by emergency response agencies when you need to take action such as a shelter in place or an evacuation.
Bookmark the Oregon Health Authority and local health department’s website or Facebook page that regularly notifies residents of health emergencies and other issues affecting the community. Follow public health departments like OHA who use social media to deliver accurate and timely information.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) live weather radar app provides real-time radar imagery and severe weather alerts. Or purchase a weather radio to stay up to date with the latest developments.
See what to do if you have one of these emergency alerts. (Here’s a hint: drop it, cover and keep waiting.) This sounds pretty simple. But as this article by Dare A. Baldwin of the University of Oregon from The Conversation states, researchers who study people’s responses to emergency alerts suggest that many people simply do nothing.
Have a Home Escape Plan: Make sure everyone in your home knows your emergency escape plan including how to safely exit dwellings, where you will all meet and how you will communicate with each other if the phones are not working.
Think of your own emergency kit. Seriously, we’ve known for years that we need to put together emergency kits for our homes. Watch this 2015 video as Ali Ryan, the Geosciences Information Officer for the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries, shows us inside her emergency kit and gives advice on what to pack. Listen to the Peak Northwest podcast as Jim Ryan and Jamie Hale interview Marilyn Bishop, founder of Cascadia Quake Kits, as they talk about how to prepare. And then, maybe do something about it.
Gather the essentials in one place. Ideally, you’ll need two weeks of supplies, and water tops the list. Janet Eastman explains the essential items to store and what to consider during preparation. (Don’t forget what your pets will need, too.)
Prepare your ’emergency bag’. Wildfires have changed some of the ways we think about emergency preparedness. Having a “travel bag” ready has become a must for all of us. Apply the lessons in this guide to earthquake prep, with reminders about portable essentials like first aid kits, masks, extra clothing, tools, and of course food and water.
Already prepared with supplies? It is good for you. Use this opportunity to check your emergency supplies for expired items like medicines. Even canned goods have expiration dates (don’t forget to pack a can opener), and you’ll want to check to see if your batteries and chargers are still working or if important documents need updating.
Earthquake-Resistant Homes and Workspaces: As the ground begins to move, everyday objects can become dangerous projectiles, explains Kaley Williams. Experts advise conducting a thorough “risk research” in your home, and identifying anything that could pose a risk. Install latches on cabinets with dishes, secure heavy bookcases to walls with straps or screws, and use closed hooks or earthquake putty to secure pictures and mirrors to walls so they don’t collapse. Learn more in Williams’ step-by-step guide to preparing for the Big One.
Inventory your home. An hour spent taking stock photos of your home can now save you hundreds of agonizing hours trying to piece the information together for an insurance claim after a disaster. Follow these steps to create a home inventory.
Learn more. The Oregon Office of Emergency Management has all kinds of resources for individuals, communities, and businesses.

One important advantage is the speed at which information is sent and received. With the help of the internet, the shopping habits of many persons have drastically changed. The car insurance industry hasn't remained untouched by these changes. On the internet, drivers can compare insurance prices and find out which sellers have the best offers. View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price. Using brokerage websites will allow drivers to get quotes from multiple insurers, thus making the comparison faster and easier.
