Two small earthquakes were reported off the coast near Eastlake Thursday morning afternoon

EASTLAK, Ohio (WOIO) – Two earthquakes of 2.1 and 2.5 on the Richter scale were reported about 3 kilometers off the shore of Lake Erie Thursday, according to the National Seismic Information Center in Colorado.

The first quake occurred around 4 a.m., and the second occurred around 1 p.m., said Julie Dutton, a seismologist at the National Information Center.

According to officials with the US Geological Survey’s Columbus office, the depth of the tremors was “shallow” and may have been felt by local residents, but not enough to cause significant damage to buildings.

Eastlake Fire Department officials confirmed they had seen reports of residents feeling tremors on social media, but had not received any reports of damage or injuries.

The area has seen a recent spike in activity, with a 2.8 earthquake occurring on January 4.

Dutton said that while the evidence points to an active fault current in the area, it is not indicative of more serious earthquakes or geological activity.

While earthquakes of this size are common, with more than 100,000 occurring worldwide each year, according to the NEIC website, Ohio has experienced only six such earthquakes since 2010.

The National Earthquake Information Center and the US Geological Survey continue to monitor the area for further activity.
