That mysterious rumble in Greenwich? The US Geological Survey reported that it was a minor earthquake

Several residents reported feeling some kind of tremor around 1 p.m. in various neighborhoods around Greenwich.

Local authorities weren’t sure why, but the USGS later reported that a 1.4-magnitude earthquake occurred 2 km northwest of Cos Cope at 12:38 p.m.

The US Geological Survey reported that the quake was felt in Cos Cope, Greenwich, Old Greenwich and Riverside.

Social media investigators were on the case shortly after the growl, which some locals also described as making a loud noise.

“Here in Cos Cope, the house was shivering badly,” a local resident said on Twitter. “I ran assuming that a huge old oak tree had fallen!” Another answered.

A resident of Port Chester, New York, described the phenomenon that lies above the state line from Greenwich. One Glenville resident said she felt a mysterious boom in her neighborhood. A resident of northern Mianos initially thought that something had fallen on his house.

Another commentator on Twitter joked that a science project had gone terribly wrong at Greenwich High School, but as of Thursday afternoon, the high school was completely sound.

Police Captain Mark Zuckerella said the department received some calls from residents in the afternoon, but he did not have immediate answers to provide. Police said there did not appear to be a public health threat.

There was no indication at the fire station what might have caused the strife.

“We haven’t responded to anything like that,” Fire Department Deputy Chief Sean Morris said.

A small earthquake was detected in Greenwich in 2016, as southern New England has had some small earthquakes in recent decades.
