Design of foot bridges in the Red Zone, landing, even for public discussion

Concepts of three pedestrian bridges were revealed in the Red Christchurch and one downfall of the Avon River.

The structures will be part of the green backbone, a network of corridors and green areas that embrace the river banks between downtown and New Brighton.

Funding will come from about $ 13.7 million set up by the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal Fund. Another $ 144 million has been allocated from Christchurch City Council funding and $ 40 million in Crown funding for the Red Zone over the next ten years.

The Midway Bridge, which has become a symbol of Canterbury’s earthquake after being badly twisted, will be replaced by a 45-meter-long bridge between River Road and Avonside Road.

Another 45-meter bridge and 3-meter bridge is proposed to Avondale, connecting the Hulverstone Road with a planned route not yet built.

The bridge measuring 35 meters long and 3 meters wide between Snell Pl and Avonside Dr will replace the bridge that was present before the earthquakes.

A landing to the northeast of the Gehurst Road Bridge, off Luxley Street, will include a pier on the water, a toilet, a parking lot, picnic tables, and a landscape area.

Members of the public can provide feedback on bridging and landing plans on the council’s website. The consultations end on June 29.

The development of the 602 hectare red zone is expected to take about 30 years, with a mixture of publicly funded and publicly-funded tourist attractions to go to land where about 5,500 homes stood before the Canterbury earthquakes.

Council is looking for a Quantity Surveyor to do detailed path planning, river landing and environmental rehabilitation, to be funded through the Crown’s $ 40 million contribution.
