Yellowstone National Park struck multiple earthquakes in 24 hours

More than a dozen earthquakes struck an area near Yellowstone National Park in 24 hours.

The US Geological Survey (USGS), which monitors seismic activity across the United States, recorded the latest earthquake swarm that hit the region on Friday.

The U.S. Geological Survey data recorded 20 major earthquakes with a magnitude of 1.5 or higher that day, out of dozens of smaller tremors.

The largest earthquake with a magnitude of 3.1 was recorded and struck at a depth of 6 miles, at 11:39 am on May 29.

This came between about 16 earthquakes and smaller tremors that struck an area near West Yellowstone, Montana, on May 29, between 10:50 am and 11:50 am.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey earthquake map, about 70 earthquakes and tremors were recorded on Friday alone.

The tremors struck 15 miles outside Yellowstone National Park, with depths between 1.4 miles and 6 miles underground.

This comes after 43 earthquakes with a magnitude of 1.5 struck the same region over the past 30 days, according to the Earthquake Track.

The National Park website says that so-called seismic swarms are not unusual in Yellowstone, and account for about 50 percent of all tremors in the area.

The garden also indicates that most earthquakes have a strength of 2 or less and therefore no one feels it.

Yellowstone is among the most seismically active in the United States, and sees about 700 to 3,000 earthquakes each year.

On Monday, the park entrances in Montana reopened to visitors after the country removed 14-day quarantine rules amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Yellowstone, Wyoming and Idaho entrances also reopened for daily visitors.
