An earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale hit Jammu and Kashmir on the morning of Saturday 5th February and tremors were also felt in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, particularly Noida, along with neighboring areas.

There were no reports of loss of life or damage to property from anywhere so far.

A statement from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said the quake of medium intensity occurred at 9.45 am Indochina Time. Its coordinates are 36.34 degrees north latitude and 71.05 degrees east longitude.

The epicenter of the earthquake was on the borders of Afghanistan and Tajikistan, while its depth was 181 kilometers inside the earth’s crust.

Earthquakes were reported in some parts of Pakistan. According to reports, a 5.9-magnitude earthquake hit Islamabad, Rawalpindi and several other cities in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

India’s northernmost region, especially Kashmir, is seismically located in an earthquake-prone zone, where earthquakes have wreaked havoc in the past. The last major earthquake to hit this region was on October 8, 2005, when a 7.6-magnitude earthquake killed more than 80,000 people on both sides of the Line of Control.
