Israel conducts earthquake maneuvers after several small earthquakes shake the country
The Home Front Command announced that an earthquake drill will be held at 11:05 am on Monday in a number of towns and cities across the country.
The sites will include several towns in the Jordan Valley, as well as the cities of Kiryat Shmona, Beit She’an, Acre and Nasheer in northern Israel, and Arad and Dimona in southern Israel.
A siren will be activated to test the ability to provide real-time warnings in the event of an earthquake.
While residents were originally asked to install the Home Front Command app on their phones, the IDF later announced that due to a technical issue, no alert would be sent on the app.
These large exercises come after Israel felt several earthquakes during the past month.

On January 11, an earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale hit the western coast of Cyprus and was felt by residents of neighboring Israel, Lebanon and Turkey.
Less than two weeks later, two small earthquakes shook northern Israel within hours, causing the evacuation of a school in Afula and the Beit She’an City Council.
Last week, Israel felt another earthquake off the coast of Cyprus, in what the Cyprus Geological Survey said was a follow-up to the major earthquake that occurred off the eastern Mediterranean island on January 11.

There were no reports of injuries or major damage in either case, but the unusual amount of earthquakes recently felt in parts of the country has led some residents to believe there was a larger earthquake.
In 2018, the state ombudsman warned that Israel was not at all prepared for a major earthquake. After nearly four years, not much has changed. Some blamed the political instability that paralyzed the country for two years and the absence of the state budget for three years, which has now passed.
Geological experts recently warned that about a million homes in Israel are at risk of collapsing in the event of an earthquake. According to other estimates, a major earthquake could cause about 7,000 deaths, 145,000 injuries, the displacement of 170,000 people and the destruction of 320,000 buildings.
In 2005, the Israeli government approved TAMA Plan 38 – an urban initiative designed to encourage tenants to enhance the structures of their buildings.

However, it takes a minimum of three years to get approval for TAMA Building 38, with the waiting period rising to nearly five years in the country’s most densely populated areas such as the Tel Aviv metropolitan area.
According to public radio Kahn, since 2005, only 27,000 buildings have been strengthened under the plan.
Israel lies along an active fault line: the Syrian-African Fault, a crack in the Earth’s crust that runs along the border separating Israel and Jordan.
The last major earthquake to hit the area was in 1927 – a 6.2-magnitude earthquake that killed 500 people and injured 700 – and seismologists estimate that such earthquakes occur in this area about every 100 years.
Climate crisis and responsible journalism
As the environment correspondent for The Times of Israel, I try to convey the facts and science behind climate change and environmental degradation, to explain – and criticize – official policies that affect our future, and to describe Israeli technologies that can form part of the solution.
I am passionate about the natural world and am discouraged by the dismal lack of awareness of environmental issues that most of the public and politicians in Israel display.
I’m proud to be doing my part to properly inform Times of Israel readers on this vital topic – which can really make a difference in policy.

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price.
