Mysterious shaking reported in NJ Tuesday afternoon. No evidence of earthquake.

If you happened to feel the ground shake in southern New Jersey Tuesday afternoon, it appears you are not alone.

Social media users have been reporting that they felt some shaking in their homes, and some reported hearing a loud boom in the afternoon, but so far there have been no confirmed reports of any earthquakes or sonic booms in the Garden State region.

There’s also no evidence of any isolated thunderstorms anywhere in the area.

“It would not be meteorological,” said Sarah Johnson, a forecaster for the National Weather Service’s regional forecast office in Mount Holly.

“There are no thunderstorms around,” Johnson noted. “It’s clear for much of the coastal plains of New Jersey. There are some high clouds off the coast and lower clouds over northern Jersey.”

Police in Egg Harbor Township, one of the areas mentioned on social media, said they haven’t felt any shaking.

“We have gotten no calls about it yet, and we haven’t felt anything here,” a police dispatcher said.

Twitter user Dave Leek said more than 40 people have reported feeling some sort of shaking in New Jersey Tuesday afternoon and posted their reports on volcanodiscovery.com.

The website described the incident as an “unconfirmed earthquake or seismic-like event,” saying it occurred 17 miles east of Vineland, Cumberland County at 1:22 p.m.

Joe Martucci, a meteorologist at the Press of Atlantic City, posted a video on Twitter saying a couple of people reached out to him at between 1:40 and 1:45 pm and reported they felt some kind of earthquake or rattling.

He noted that sometimes sonic booms occur from military jets flying off the Jersey Shore from the naval air station in Maryland.

In a post on Twitter, the Herald News in Cape May County said “multiple staffers report feeling the building shake around 1:20 and then again around 1:35.” Their office is located in Rio Grande.

The Naval Air Station Patuxent River in southern Maryland had some military jets flying Tuesday afternoon, but they weren’t traveling fast enough to create a sonic boom, according to Patrick Gordon, a public affairs officer for the air station.

“We did have aircraft out of Patuxent River in the Atlantic test track this afternoon, but none of them reported going supersonic,” Gordon told NJ Advance Media.

The Atlantic test track is air space about 3 miles off the eastern seaboard, and a sonic boom would occur if a plane was flying fast enough to break the sound barrier.

Representatives of Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in Burlington County could not be reached for comment about whether any loud testing was being conducted at that Air Force base on Tuesday.
