Unexplained earthquake-like shakes felt in NJ

NEW JERSEY (WCBS 880) — Some New Jersey dwellers felt mysterious shakes and a loud boom on Tuesday afternoon and the source is yet to be determined.

People took to social media to report that they felt shaking in their homes and some heard a loud boom but there haven’t been any reports of any earthquakes nor sonic booms in the region.

The cause is also not meteorological, according to the National Weather Service, which found no thunderstorms around the area.

One Twitter user, Dave Leek, tweeted that the website volcanodiscovery.com had 42 people report feeling something shaking on Tuesday and recorded it on the site. The website classified the occurrence as an “unconfirmed earthquake or seismic event” and said it happened 17 miles east of Vineland, Cumberland County at 1:22 pm

More reports came to meteorologist Joe Martucci of the Press of Atlantic City who reached out to him between 1:40 pm and 1:45 pm saying they felt shaking and rattling.

Martucci pointed out that sometimes military jets flying off the Jersey Shore from the naval station in Maryland can cause sonic booms.

A representative from the Naval Air Station Patuxent River in southern Maryland told New Jersey Advance media that though they did have some military jets flying on Tuesday afternoon, none were going fast enough to create a sonic boom.

So far, no concrete explanation has been given to the source of the alleged shaking. For now, it remains a mystery.
