Ishinomaki, Miyagi – On March 11 this year, 84 bamboo flashlights will be lit on the ruins of Okawa Elementary School in northeastern Japan to commemorate the 84 students and school staff who died in the tsunami caused by the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake.

The memorial project, which also wishes for a safe future, will be held in the ruins of Okawa Elementary School in Ishinomaki City, Miyagi Prefecture on the eleventh anniversary of the disaster. It is the first effort planned by an executive committee that includes the families of the victims. “I would like this to be a memorial event that transcends backgrounds and prestige to bring people together in prayer before the lights,” said chief cast member Kazutaka Sato, 55, who lost his 12-year-old son in the tsunami.

The bamboo lanterns will be in a square on the north side of the Okawa Tsunami Memorial Hall, which opened in 2021, and will be lit around 5:30 pm, and the short lanterns will be approximately 5m tall. Each of the 84 lanterns will be handcrafted by bereaved families, locals, and more.

Full production began on February 8 near the ruins of Okawa Junior High School in Ishinomaki. Sato, with the residents and supporters, cut the bamboo taken from the local timber into suitable lengths and drilled holes in it. Among the members was Chikao Ikeda, a 39-year-old producer based in southwestern Kumamoto Prefecture, who is planning bamboo lantern events across the country. Provide tips and instructions including how to lower the blade vertically and slowly, and how to make holes – an important component of brightening the light from bamboo lanterns.

“Connecting” is the theme of the lanterns that are lit on Memorial Day. Ikeda said, “I want to connect the past with the future, as well as heaven and earth. I hope that people all over Japan will once again direct their hearts to the afflicted areas, and the lanterns will be a light for the people who live here to look to the future.”

Hitomi Kono, 51, who lost her 12-year-old son Daisuke, a sixth-grader at the school, spoke with another woman who lives in the area, and noted that it was the first time since the school events that they had met like this. “I would like the lights to warmly welcome our children back home,” Kono said while making a modular paper for the design of bamboo lanterns. “There were less opportunities for community interaction after the earthquake and tsunami, so great if this becomes an annual event that we all create together.”

Sato, whose son Yuki – a sixth grader at the school – died in the tsunami said, “Although it has been 11 years since the tsunami, there is no end to the disasters. With the hope that there will be no more victims of natural disasters, and without forgetting that day of 2011, I want to make this an event that will last for decades.”

From February 13 to March 6, the bamboo lantern will be produced every Sunday, and anyone can join. Details can be found at https://www.ookawatakeakari.jp/ (in Japanese)

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price.
