Japanese architect Shigeru Ban argued that social exclusion would be practically impossible in the event of a major earthquake, and officials need to devise plans to reduce density in shelters.

Award-winning Japanese architect Pritzker Shigeru Ban, famous for designing paper tubes in disaster areas, says the world needs to think about tackling natural disasters in the era of coronaviruses.

While he hopes this pandemic will reduce the collapse of crowded passenger trains in Tokyo, he warns against reliance on remote work, stressing that manual contact with materials is vital for exquisite architecture.

In an interview with AFP from his office in Tokyo, 62 years old said that cities need to start planning now to alleviate the nightmare scenario of an earthquake or a typhoon that strikes before the epidemic begins.

Ban has won approval for his involvement in disaster relief projects around the world and urged city authorities to invest in a stock of shelters that can be deployed quickly with the infection prevention in mind.

“The shelters will create groups of people. It will be too late if it takes a few days to build,” he stressed.

His team designed shelters dotted with a frame of sturdy paper tubes with a cloth hanging two meters (6.5 feet) high from the top of the cabin to the floor.

The Japanese architect has argued that social detachment will become practically impossible in the event of a major earthquake, and officials need to make plans to reduce density in shelters.

The central government and local authorities have been linked to dealing with the epidemic to the point that “only recently have people started talking about what to do in the aftermath of earthquakes.”

“I know it is not easy, but I think we have to think about it,” he said.

Three-dimensional images

In March, Ban was on his way to the airport on a flight to Paris but took a sharp turn when he heard that the French capital was about to be closed at the height of the Corona pandemic.

Since then, he has thrown himself into his job, walking five minutes to his office in Tokyo seven days a week.

“Maybe this was the first time in 16 years that I had stayed in Japan for more than a month. I was very impressed by the beauty of spring in Japan,” he said.

“I do not do anything but work. I have no hobbies and I do not do anything special because we are in this situation,” he told AFP.

Ban has traveled around the world for his architecture – including building Cardboard Cathedral for Christchurch in New Zealand after the 2011 earthquake – but he fears the coronary virus could encourage Japanese students to stay.

“My biggest concern is that students may become afraid. Even before the problems of the coronavirus, fewer and fewer students wanted to study abroad because Japan is safe and peaceful,” he said.

Despite aging populations and some of the most crowded cities on Earth, Japan has relatively escaped the epidemic, with fewer than 900 dead and nearly 17,000 cases.

And while the virus provides a “great opportunity” to reduce congestion in crowded public transport, Ban said: “This does not mean that we should not get out.”

“It is dangerous to try to solve everything with technology. It is wrong to think that we do not have to meet in person because we can have a video chat,” he said.

He added that close contact with the materials remains the key to impressive architecture, which technology cannot replace.

He said: “Drawing parts or three-dimensional images using computers is completely different from building models or creating things by touching materials and feeling the weight.”

“This is true no matter how sophisticated the technology is.”

Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily.
