Aceh struck by a 4.8 magnitude earthquake, and damage was reported to Sabang

The latest information indicates that this earthquake caused damage to Keunekai City, Sabang City, Weh Island

Jakarta (Antara) – An earthquake of magnitude 4.8 shook the southeastern part of Banda Aceh, the capital of Aceh province, on Thursday, around 5:31 am local time, causing damage to Keunekai District, Sabang City, one of the popular tourist destinations in Sumatra island.

Dariono, head of the earthquake mitigation and tsunami department of Jakarta-based Meteorology and Climatology Agency (BMKG) said, “The latest information indicates that this earthquake caused damage in Kyonkai, Sabang city, Wei Island.”

He noted that the epicenter of the earthquake is located on the ground, about five kilometers from the southeastern part of Banda Aceh at a depth of 10 kilometers, adding that the earthquake caused damage in Keunekai District of Sabang City, Weh Island.

Dariono revealed that until 6:40 am local time, aftershocks, major shock, and five aftershocks were felt in the regions.

Aceh Province is one of the regions in Indonesia prone to natural disasters, such as earthquakes, tsunami and floods.

In 2004, the deadly tsunami struck Banda Aceh and other parts of Aceh after a strong earthquake.

Indonesia is located on the Circum-Pacific Belt, also called the “Ring of Fire”, where many tectonic plates meet and cause volcanic activities and frequent earthquakes. Indonesia is vulnerable to natural disasters, including earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

This indicates that Indonesia experienced a significant increase in the number of tectonic earthquakes in 2018.

Many of the earthquake-related events that struck Indonesia in 2018 were the first of their kind to occur, such as the liquefaction in Palu, a tsunami struck before a tsunami warning was issued in Palu, and the Sunda Strait Tsunami.
