6.2 magnitude earthquake hits Guam; Aftershocks are likely in the coming hours

A 6.2-magnitude earthquake occurred south of Guam on Monday, February 14th.

The US geo-seismic reports said that there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage, or a warning of a tsunami.

However, people in the affected area may experience shaking as aftershocks are likely in the coming hours.

A 6.2-magnitude earthquake rocked Guam’s village of Merizzo on Monday morning, according to the US Geological Survey.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) – no tsunami warning has been issued yet.

The epicenter was located 175 kilometers (109 miles) south of Guam. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage from the recent 6.2-magnitude earthquake that hit Guam.

However, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) tsunami warning system said some areas could experience shaking.

The 6.2-magnitude earthquake was at a depth of 43 kilometers (27 miles).

It is relatively robust and has the potential for severe damage and disablement based on the Richter volume scale, according to the USGS.

Previous earthquakes in Guam

Although earthquakes on Guam are not frequent, the island has experienced some of the strongest earthquakes over the past 200 years.

1849 – A 7.5-magnitude earthquake in Guam causes an unspecified number of casualties, causing extensive infrastructure damage and a tsunami. 1902 – An 8.1-magnitude earthquake causes few casualties and extensive damage to infrastructure. 1909 – A magnitude 8.0 earthquake is responsible for moderate damage to infrastructure and a tsunami. The earthquake caused $250 million in infrastructure damage. 2002 – A 7.1-magnitude earthquake injures five people and causes minor damage to infrastructure. Friction from these tectonic plates leads to active seismic activities, including earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

The Ring of Fire has a length of 40,000 km (24,900).

The Ring of Fire lies above the boundaries of many tectonic plates, including the Cocos, Pacific, Juan de Fuca, Indian-Australia, Nazca, North American, and Philippine Plates.

Approximately 90% of earthquakes occur along the Ring of Fire.

Furthermore, more than 450 or 75% of Earth’s volcanoes are located within this seismically active region of the Pacific Ocean.
