Fuel shortages are preventing the distribution of critical medical supplies in the Tigray region
For the first time since July 2021, the WHO has been allowed to deliver medical supplies to Tigray, Ethiopia, but there is no fuel to distribute them to health centers.
| Stocks that are now in stock until they can be distributed include basic medical equipment, personal protective equipment, antibiotics, drugs for malaria and diabetes, including insulin, treatment of severe acute malnutrition, and drugs and supplies for reproductive health. Fuel for humanitarian operations has not been allowed in Tigray since August 2021, except for two WFP trucks in November. Lack of fuel, cash and supplies has led to the reduction or complete cessation of humanitarian operations in Tigray, as highlighted in the OCHA humanitarian update for northern Ethiopia last week. |

WHO shipments, which are part of planned deliveries of 33.5 metric tons, still represent a small part of what is needed. Without access to supplies, health professionals try to continue to provide health services with almost no drugs or functional equipment.
According to OCHA, health partners estimate that the following supplies are needed to meet the urgent nutritional and health needs of the people of Tigray: 2,200 metric tons of emergency medical kits; 1.5 million doses of cholera vaccine; oral vaccination against polio for 888,000 children under the age of five; more than 30,000 metric tons of food supplies for the treatment of severe acute malnutrition in outpatient clinics and 100 metric tons for children hospitalized in stabilization centers; about 830 metric tons of nutritional supplements to boost the diets of 1.4 million people, mostly women and children; and 15,000 metric tons of vitamin A supplements.
Nutrition rates among children and pregnant and lactating women in Tigray, as well as in Amhara and Afar, remain alarmingly high. For example, diet screening campaigns conducted in recent months found that 71% of pregnant and breastfeeding women in Tigray were acutely malnourished. The figure in Afar was 45% and in Amhara 14%.
Access was relatively easier in the Amhara and Afar regions as the WHO delivered 84 metric tons of stock at the end of December 2021. The WHO plans to ship an additional 15-20 metric tons to Afar to meet the health needs of people recently displaced due to ongoing fighting on the Tigray-Afar border.
The WHO reiterates its call for a smooth approach to humanitarian aid in Tigray. We call for the urgent release of fuel into Tigray, with the support of national authorities and international partners, so that the WHO and partners can meet the humanitarian needs of all Ethiopians.
