Earthquakes detected near North Korean nuclear site as testing resumes

The earthquakes occurred near a nuclear test site in North Korea amid the country’s hints of resuming its testing program for the first time in several years.

Since late last week, several low-intensity earthquakes have been recorded near the site, highlighting continued seismic activity and geological instability in North Korea and surrounding areas.

South Korean government experts said previous nuclear explosions have permanently altered the geology of the area, leading to seismic activity.

Amid hints of resuming nuclear testing, North Korea is reported to be facing a potential backlash over the potential threats posed by its nuclear program.

Over recent years, international regulations and sanctions, particularly from the United States, have prompted a series of failed talks between North Korea and the United States and its allies.

Between Friday and Tuesday, February 11 and February 15, at least four natural earthquakes occurred near North Korea’s Punggye-ri nuclear test site, according to Sky News.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage or a tsunami warning.

The strength of the earthquakes ranged between 2.5 and 3.1 degrees.

The latest 2.5-magnitude quake occurred 36 kilometers (22 miles) from the site, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) in Seoul.

Recent earthquakes highlight continuing seismic activity and geological instability in the region, according to the KMA.

South Korean government experts have reportedly said that nuclear explosions in the past have permanently altered the geology in the area, CTV News reported.

However, geological changes caused by nuclear explosions are not new as similar cases have been recorded when the United States and Russia have also conducted their own nuclear tests over the past several decades.

Possible resumption of nuclear tests

The Kuwait News Agency (KMA) recorded the latest earthquakes amid North Korea’s indications of resuming its nuclear tests for the first time in several years.

For example, North Korea started the year with a series of missile tests, according to the New York Times.

North Korea’s last known nuclear test was in September 2017, when the country detonated its sixth and largest nuclear bomb.

Since then, criticism and economic sanctions against North Korea have escalated, but the country remains engaged in missile tests amid international pressure.

Failed talks with the United States and its allies

According to US Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken, North Korea was “in a phase of provocation” due to the nuclear threat posed by North Korea when it began the year with a series of missile tests, according to NBC News.

Blinken’s statement came on Saturday, Feb. 12, when the United States, Japan and South Korea held a meeting in Hawaii, USA, to condemn North Korea’s recent missile tests and discuss possible measures to counter the threats.
