Madeira: 5.1-magnitude earthquake hits a tourist area

A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 5.1 struck the popular tourist islands of Madeira on Wednesday, the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) said.

EMSC said the quake occurred at a depth of 30 km and struck near Funchal in Madeira in part of Portugal.

Many people have reported the terrifying experience of shaking rooms due to the force of the earthquake.

One person tweeted: “I was in my bed and I chased after him… It was scary. The whole bed shook.

The earthquake occurred on Wednesday morning.

“What’s going on man?…There was an earthquake here on my island – Madeira. And it was so strong. I’m scared!!!!”

There has been an increase in earthquakes on or near Madeira in recent years
