There is no civil service to mark the anniversary of the Christchurch earthquake

There will be no civic memorial service in Christchurch next week to mark the eleventh anniversary of the February 22, 2011 earthquake that killed 185 people.

Mayor Lianne Dalziel said the service will not take place due to restrictions imposed to curb the spread of the Omicron Covid-19 variant.

“This year, given the public health measures in place to help limit the spread of Covid-19, there will be no such public gathering,” Dalziel said.

“Instead, each of us will have to find our own way to celebrate our anniversaries and remember the people and places we’ve lost.”

Dalziel will place a wreath on the memorial wall at Oi Manawa Canterbury Earthquake National Memorial on behalf of the city. The names of the 185 people killed in the earthquake will be read aloud.

“People may want to celebrate their anniversary simply by spending time with the people who are most important to them – their friends and family,” Dalziel said.

“Others may wish to visit the memorial wall at Oi Manawa National Earthquake Memorial in Canterbury, or they may wish to observe a minute’s silence at 12.51pm – the time the earthquake struck.

Dalziel said people can still recognize the anniversary by joining in community events like Flower River, which will be held at multiple locations across the city on Tuesdays between 12.30 and 1.30 p.m.

“The event organizers are inviting people to come to select locations along the Atacaro Avon River and the Apuahu Heathcote River to put a flower in the water,” Dalziel said.

Dalziel said future celebrations will also be scaled back. The memorial service will continue when there is an important milestone to be recognized, such as the 20th anniversary, or the visit of international bereaved families to Christchurch – especially those who were unable to come to celebrate the 10th anniversary.

“Although we are turning away from the annual civil memorial services, this does not mean that we have forgotten the loss and trauma that people suffered that day – nor have we forgotten the special relationship we enjoy with bereaved families around the world.
