Gameiro Montero still fretting about trade from Philadelphia Union to San Jose Earthquakes

When Gameiro Montero settled with the San Jose Earthquakes, he quickly noticed a few things.

One was the warmest weather in the Bay Area, evidenced by his wife and children shedding their winter coats when they arrived at San Jose airport earlier this week.

The other was a bunch of personal communications that Montero got from the Earthquakes front office and didn’t feel like he was getting it from the Federation anymore.

If you thought the trade unfolded quickly from an outsider’s perspective, I did for Montero as well. But he revealed that after his visa issue was resolved, he spent a week in Philadelphia rather than going to Union training camp in Clearwater, Florida, while he waited for the deal to be completed.

“For me, it was a small surprise,” he said Thursday in his first press conference since the trade. “For me it wasn’t necessary to leave. But Philly had another plan, to play with the youth, and San Jose did something too, what Philly didn’t do for me – which is why for me, that choice was also a better option.”

This “thing” implies a new contract. A source familiar with the situation told The Inquirer that San Jose secured 2023, which was an elective year, and added a team option for 2024. Montero made just under $1.5 million last year as a designated player, and was going to get a raise on that increase. In general, it would have been in line for a bigger increase with a new deal.

Although San Jose has yet to officially announce the new contract, it is coming.

But Monteiro hinted that perhaps there was more to it than just money – in particular, that there was a break in communication between him and the federation’s front office.

“It’s not just that that’s important,” Monteiro said. “It is also important how you see your player, how you meet him, if you have a plan for your player. And for me, Philly didn’t give that. They had some other plans.”

As Monteiro, 28, said, those other plans centered around giving more playing time to a quartet of potential youngsters in midfield: Paxton Aaronson, Leon Flach, Jack McGlenn and Quinn Sullivan.

“I got a call from the coach [in San Jose, Matías Almeyda]I got a call from the manager [general manager Chris Leitch]And the incentive they gave me, I didn’t feel anything from Philly,” said Montero. “For me, it was the best option in my eyes. And now this year, we’re going to let that happen, and maybe we’ll see.”

Montero will play on the pitch in San Jose after winning international acclaim for playing for Cape Verde at the Africa Cup of Nations. This was his first time in the tournament, and he started in all four of the Blue Sharks’ matches as they finished third in their group and advanced to the round of 16. They were lost there by final champion Senegal.

If it was a special match against Senegalese stars like Sadio Mane of Liverpool, it was also special to play against Cameroon. He was in the building with fellow FA Olivier Mbezzo, who came on as a late substitute for Cameroon just minutes after Monteiro was sacked. It was the first time that two players from the Federation had played in the same match in a major tournament for the national team, even if fate meant they didn’t play at the same time.

“Mbizzo is like a brother to me, a brother from another mother,” said Monteiro. “I was hoping he would play in that match for more minutes, but the most important thing [was] I saw him. It was wonderful to see him. We hugged each other.”

Whatever sad feelings Monteiro has for the federation front office, he has nothing of it toward federation fans. He is looking forward to returning to Subaru Park on March 12th when the earthquakes play here.

“I love Philly fans,” he said. “Everyone knows how much I value Philly. For me, it is a club I will never forget. It would be strange to be in Philly with another shirt – but honestly, I will do my best to win that match.”
