JALUKEI, February 18 (MExN): The Pirin District Disaster Management Authority, under the auspices of the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority, organized the annual Jaloke earthquake mock exercise on February 18.

According to the DIPR report, the exercise was intended to create awareness among the communities and also to check the preparedness of the area on how to respond effectively in the event of an earthquake. A staging area has been set up at a state secondary school, Galocki.

Simulating the impact of an 8.7 Richter Scale earthquake, the exercise was conducted at two seriously affected schools – Saint Xavier’s School where five casualties were reported, and ITM’s School in Jalokee where 15 casualties were reported.

The exercise began with the siren sounding at 11:00 am by the Fire and Emergency Services personnel, followed by a briefing led by the officer in charge, Dr. Tenogongshi Zhang, ADC Jalukie in his office.

After that, the Incident Response Team switched to full business. During the exercises, it was reported that Jaloke – Dimapur and Jaloke on Birin Road were closed due to landslides, and some houses were also set ablaze. At St Xavier School, the process was carried out by DEF while at ITMS it was carried out by staff of 12BN NDRF.

Deputy Commissioner and Chairman of DDMA Peren, Sentiwapang Aier who was the lead observer said the overall exercise was a success but during the rescue operation there were some communication and public participation gaps in the affected areas which need improvement. Meanwhile, DC commended the concerned officials, the public and students for their cooperation in making the exercise a success.
