Magnitude 5.6 earthquake strikes near Blenheim – earthquakes felt in Wellington

An earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale hit the top of the South Island and the bottom of the North Island this afternoon.

GeoNet reported a 5.6-magnitude earthquake that struck 35 km southwest of Blenheim just after 4 p.m.

GeoNet says the earthquake’s depth was 32 km.

It was reported that people on social media felt it across the Upper South Island and Lower North Island including Wellington, Nelson and Palmerston North.

While its center was near Blenheim, it was widely felt in Wellington and Nelson, with some describing it as a low, rolling rumble that made household items sway.

“Yekes,” said a woman who felt the earthquake in Nelson.
