New Zealand was hit by a 5.6-magnitude earthquake

New Zealanders described hearing a “huge bang” as the country was hit by a 5.6-magnitude earthquake.

The earthquake struck both the northern and southern islands just after 4:00 p.m. local time today, February 21, and its epicenter is believed to be located about 30 kilometers southwest of Seddon, a small town in Marlborough, on the South Island of New Zealand.

It was said to have struck at a depth of 30 kilometres, although no major damage or injuries had been reported at the time of writing.

The state seismograph, GeoNet NZ, which records earthquakes and reports tremors, said it had received more than 15,000 post-quake reports.

She wrote on her website: “The shallow M5.6 earthquake near Blenheim caused a good tremor now, mostly felt by people in the upper South Island and Lower North Island. The tremor was strong in intensity.

More than a dozen reports, likely from those near the epicenter, described the event as “extreme”, while more than 250 described it as “strong.” Most reports described it as “light” or “weak”.

Members of the audience in Seddon described hearing the quake before they felt it, with residents Terry and Karen Renner telling 9News they felt “a bit of panic” when the quake struck.

‘We were outside,’ said Karen, ‘we were standing in the back and we heard a huge bang. We have a large shed in the back and that really rocked it. We looked at the truck and it was rocking and rolling.

Fortunately, nothing was broken, and Karen said she did not notice any aftershocks.

She added, “Well, we thought it couldn’t be too big. Normally, if there’s a big guy, all the people come outside, gather on the street, into town. We all make sure our neighbors are okay.”

Earthquakes are not uncommon in New Zealand, and in fact GeoNet describes locating “between 50 and 80 earthquakes each day, or about 20,000 annually.”

Most of these events are too small to be noticed by residents, but the frequency comes due to New Zealand’s location on the so-called “Ring of Fire” – an arc of 40 thousand km of volcanoes and ocean trenches that circle a large part of the Pacific Ocean.

The “strong” earthquake that was felt in New Zealand around 4:00 pm was one of five to hit New Zealand in the last day, according to GeoNet, which describes three of the previous earthquakes as “weak” and one as “moderate”.
