An earthquake measuring 2.8 on the Richter scale

A 2.8-magnitude earthquake struck the West Midlands late Monday night (February 21).

The British Geological Survey says the quake hit Walsall, near Birmingham, at 10.59pm.

The service says tremors were felt within a 12-mile radius of the epicenter, with tremors being felt by residents in Birmingham, Wolverhampton and Dudley.

Affected residents told BGS that the quake shook their homes, while one said it “was like a wardrobe that fell or an explosion in the window”.

The earthquake was recorded at a depth of about 3.5 miles and its epicenter was about eight miles from the 4.7 magnitude earthquake at Dudley that was felt across most of England on September 22, 2002.

People were quick to take to Twitter to discuss the shakes.

The quake was felt by residents of West Brom, Wolverhampton, Walsall and downtown Birmingham.

We “felt it” at Walsall, Nick H said, in a tweet from @nickle1707.

While @lisamorganwfc felt it at Pelsall.

Alex Smith (@alexdsmiff) said they felt it in West Bromwich and their nephew did at Wolverhampton.

Dan Silverstone, in a tweet from @pica_creative, simply said he “scared the divorced out of him”, as he “shaken his bed and shut the door”. “I don’t need this in my life,” he added.

While @affiejam said she didn’t feel it at Handsworth.

Another person said it “was like a wardrobe falling or an explosion in the window”.

No known injuries Michigan Tech says the 2.8-magnitude quake is the second lowest in intensity, saying these quakes are “felt often, but cause only minor damage” and that 500,000 of these have been recorded in all over the world every year.

Volcano Discovery stated: “Based on initial seismic data, the earthquake should not have caused any significant damage, but it was probably felt by many people as a slight shaking in the epicenter area. A weak tremor was probably felt in Streetly (13,300 people) located 5 km from the epicenter, West Bromwich (135,600 people) 5 km away.”
