Internet restored in Tonga 5 weeks after earthquake stopped connecting

Tonga’s main internet connection to the rest of the world has finally been restored more than five weeks after a massive volcanic eruption and tsunami cut a critical undersea cable. Three people were killed in Tonga by the tsunami on January 15 and dozens of homes were destroyed.

Samuela Fonua, President of Tonga Cable Ltd. , the state-owned company that owns the cable, the fiber-optic cable is now fully operational again after it was reconnected on Tuesday. “It’s a relief to know that things have come to an end and are doing well,” Fonua told The Associated Press. “It’s one step forward for the country.” Funua said the crew on a repair ship had replaced about 90 kilometers (56 miles) of cable damaged by the tsunami. Funua added that his company did not have enough spare cables and needed to borrow some from other companies.

Funua said the repair means Cable Tonga can now focus on repairing the second cut cable that connects some of the outer islands to the main island. This cable runs near the volcano under the sea.

Founua said that Entrepreneur Elon Musk’s SpaceX company has also helped restore communications through its network of low-orbiting satellites called Starlink.

Founua said his company has been testing satellite communications this week and has been doing well. He said the main cable has now been restored, and he hoped SpaceX communications could be used to reconnect people on some of the outer islands.

Officials in neighboring Fiji said SpaceX has set up a station there to help restore communications in Tonga.

Tonga is also struggling with the first outbreak of the coronavirus, which may have come from foreign military crews on ships and planes that were providing vital aid after the eruption. The outbreak has grown to more than 250 cases but so far no deaths have been reported. The country of 105,000 has begun easing some virus restrictions after initially imposing a lockdown. Tonga health officials say 90% of people aged 12 or older have had at least two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.
