Five more earthquakes you may have felt in the West Midlands

The Walsall earthquake struck late last night, sending thousands to Facebook and Twitter to ask – “Has anyone else felt it?” This earthquake registered 3.2 on the Richter scale – a measurement used to determine the intensity of the tremor.

Earthquakes of this type generally don’t cause any real damage, and it’s a roll of the dice to see if you’ll feel anything at all unless you’re on top of it. One Birmingham Live reader in Great Barr, less than four miles away, said they hadn’t noticed.

It is estimated that about 1 million small earthquakes of this magnitude or less occur worldwide each year. And very few people have honored the West Midlands in the past 20 years as well, although you may not have felt some of those things.

The UK’s largest earthquake in the past 20 years was centered near Market Racine, in Lincolnshire, when a 5.2-magnitude quake struck just before 1am on February 27, 2008. It was felt by many across the country – and as far away as Belgium and France – it was strong Enough to cause structural damage to buildings, a teenager in Barnsley was hit by a lump of chimney that fell from his rooftop.

Here are five earthquakes you may have noticed. Let us know in the comments if you remember any of these!

2002 – “Dudley Earthquake”

The Dudley earthquake on September 23, 2002 was significant for the UK – it registered 4.8 on the Richter scale, but fortunately did not cause much damage. Thousands have called emergency services to find out why their furniture and windows are shaking.

If you go back to sleep right after that, the next person may have completely missed you. The aftershock occurred around 4:30 AM and had a magnitude of 2.7.

Weaker than last night’s earthquake in Walsall, it probably wouldn’t have woken you up. Only nocturnal birds and those who wake up in early shifts will notice this.

The main event was still a shocker for people at the time. “I jumped out of bed and the floor was also shaking. It literally only lasted about 20 seconds but it scared me,” a reader told the Mail at the time.

2005 – Birmingham

Now we can get to the real loathing – earthquakes you shouldn’t really feel. Birmingham was hit by a magnitude 1.7 earthquake on October 8, 2005.

It was recorded at 9.46 p.m., and stationed at Bartley Green. Earthquakes generally need to be about 2.5 magnitudes before people notice them.

Small earthquakes like this basically happen somewhere in the world all the time. Supposedly the epicenter was near Clapgate Lane – tell us if you remember anything from that night.

Not too far away in Scilly Oak, a 1.6-ton earthquake struck in 2003. This earthquake was centered around Scilly Oak Park and Gibbins Road.

Like the one that happened in 2005, this was not to make a fuss for anyone. Even if you feel it somehow, chances are you could put it back in chalk to a heavy vehicle going past, or the wind.

Comment if you think you felt something strange around midday on March 24, 2003.

2011 – Sandwill

In the black country, an earthquake of between 1.5 and 2 magnitude hit the Sandwell and Dudley region on November 12, 2011.

The reason you might see different Richter numbers for the same earthquake is because it takes time to fully analyze the sensor data. That’s why you see either a 2.8 or a 3.2 of last night’s earthquake strength in Walsall, for example.

Let us know if you remember any bumps in the night for this one!

2013 – Sutton Coldfield

Moved to Sutton Coldfield for our last entry in 2013. A magnitude 1.3 earthquake, later reduced to a small 0.5, was detected just before midday on April 20, 2013.

This centered around the western edge of Sutton Park, near Queslett Road. Not many people live above the supposed epicenter.

We suspect this has shaken the dust — but let us know if you feel anything.
