Remember the 2002 Dudley earthquake that closed the school and triggered hundreds of 999 calls

As the West Midlands experienced an earthquake in the Black Country today – it was the first significant earthquake to occur in the area in 20 years. Early this morning (February 22), a 2.8-magnitude earthquake struck Andrew Road, in Walsall – and its impact was felt around Black Country and Birmingham.

However, a 71 percent greater magnitude occurred in Dudley on September 23, 2002. The epicenter of that quake, with a magnitude of 4.8, was in an area surrounding Brick Killen Lane in the Journal, near the famous Crooked House.

It happened before 1 am that day. Many people living in the area may remember the 20-second tremor – which was the largest in Britain in a decade.

Within an hour of her shaking on the ground, West Midlands Police said she received 5,000 calls to her switchboard and 600 calls to 999. Twelve went to Dudley Police Station in their pajamas.

Meanwhile, the Sunshine Infant School in Walsall was forced to close after being damaged by earthquakes. A message was left on the gates outside the school saying “School is closed today due to last night’s earthquake”.

The residents of the area remembered the shaking of their homes. “The shivering and shivering were really intense,” said Richard Flynn, of Oldbury.

“Quite a few people came out of their homes wondering what was going on. The streets were dark with the power out.”

Jesse Burchill, of Wrens Nest Road, Dudley, said her husband jumped out of bed. She added, “It was awful. The whole house shook. I’ve never experienced anything like it before.”

It “scared the hell out” of her, said Zoe Barnes, of Bevan Avenue, Parkfields. “The dogs were barking in the kitchen and I didn’t know what to think,” she said.
