Tenerife holiday fears as Canary Islands volcano may wake up after new earthquake | world | News

A 3.7-magnitude earthquake occurred between the two islands on Saturday. It is found where the Enmedio volcano, discovered almost 30 years ago, sleeps.

Enmedio was put on the map by the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO) in the late 1990s after a 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck thirty aftershocks in the Canary Islands.

The IEO traveled to the site, 25.47 kilometers from Tenerife and 36.2 kilometers from Gran Canaria, just a few weeks ago, to find a very large trace on the sea floor that warns, according to the institute, of the strength of the volcano.

The volcanic edifice is 1,630 meters deep at its summit and 2,100 meters at its base, with a maximum height of 470 metres, close to a fault line of about 35 kilometres.

An underwater giant, its base can accommodate 539 football fields, with a diameter of about 3 kilometers and two secondary cones.

While the interior is active, there is currently no apparent seismic activity.

However, confirmation by the National Geographic Institute (IGN) that movement was being felt in several areas of the islands, which are separated by 190 kilometers of water, brought fear back to two areas that only months earlier had experienced the effects of a long-lasting eruption. La Palma is nearby.

Cumbre Vega brought chaos to the small island in September last year and it didn’t stop until the end of December.

85 days of rumbling caused an estimated £760 million in damage to the island’s infrastructure – so the prospect of another volcanic episode is unsurprisingly frightening for Canary Islanders.

However, according to Maria Jose Blanco, director of IGN, they can rest assured that tantrums like the one at La Palma will not occur.

She told the Spanish newspaper ABC: “This is a monogenetic volcano, and it will not erupt again.

“As its name indicates, it is a unique origination.”

This, she explained, is what “distinguishes it from other well-known volcanoes” such as Ted, “which is a polygenic volcano, meaning it produces one eruption after another,” or Etna, with “a compact rocky chamber.”

Italy’s Mount Etna erupted again Monday night – for the 54th time in the past 12 months – sending a plume of ash into the sky over Sicily.

At 10,900 feet at its highest point, it is the tallest active volcano in Europe, and its frequent activity throughout 2021 has increased its size by 100 feet in one year.
