Magnitude 6.1 earthquake strikes Indonesia’s Sumatra island, at least two people are killed

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 struck inland near the western coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra on Friday, killing at least two people and causing tremors to be felt in neighboring Singapore and Malaysia, officials and witnesses said.

The earthquake, which was not likely to trigger a tsunami, caused residents to flee buildings in some areas including the city of Padang in West Sumatra province, and even caused evacuations in Malaysia.

“We continue to monitor and advise people to stay alert,” Dwikorita Karnawati, head of Indonesia’s geophysics agency BMKG, told MetroTV. The agency initially estimated the volume at 6.2.

The head of Indonesia’s disaster mitigation agency Suhariyanto said at least two people had died and some buildings, including a government office, homes and a bank, were damaged.

In West Basaman, about 10.6 miles from the epicenter, a hospital was evacuated and panic prevailed in some areas.

People gathered outside their homes and workplaces. They were afraid of tremors. “The cables were shaking,” said Frans Kiki Nainggolan, a shop owner who lives in Riau province.

In Malaysia, the fire department in the capital, Kuala Lumpur, said it had received multiple calls about the tremors being felt in the city, although there were so far no reports of injuries or structural damage.

“The tremors were felt for one to two minutes…we quickly evacuated and others from another floor as well,” Helva Akmal, a resident of Subang Jaya on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur, told Reuters.

Singapore police said on Twitter that authorities had received calls from people reporting tremors, although there were no reports of injuries.

Indonesia experiences frequent earthquakes located on both sides of the so-called “Pacific Ring of Fire”, a highly seismically active region, where different plates meet on the Earth’s crust.

A fault stretching along the island of Sumatra can be particularly dangerous, and in 2009 an earthquake devastated parts of Padang and killed more than a thousand people.

In 2004, a 9.1-magnitude earthquake and tsunami off the province of Aceh at the northern tip of Sumatra killed 226,000 people in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Thailand and nine other countries.
