A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck near the western coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra on Friday, damaging homes, injuring many people and shaking buildings in neighboring Singapore and Malaysia.

The earthquake, which occurred at 8:39 a.m. local time, struck the ground at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.21 miles), the country’s Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysical Agency wrote on Twitter, BMKG.

Dwikorita Karnawati, president of the BMKG, said there was no danger of a tsunami, although she warned of possible aftershocks, Reuters reported.

“We continue to monitor and advise people to stay alert,” Karnawati told Metro TV. “Because that’s on Earth, and the scale is above 6, we’re concerned that it could cause some damage.”

Television reports showed that the quake pushed panicked people into the streets in Padang, the capital of West Sumatra province. Patients were evacuated at a hospital in West Bassaman, about 10.5 miles from the epicenter.

Hamswardi, West Pasaman district chief, said the quake caused light and moderate damage to dozens of homes and buildings and injured many people, but no deaths were reported.

Indonesia suffers frequent earthquakes due to its location on the “Ring of Fire”, a highly seismically active region that surrounds the Pacific Ocean, where the various plates on the Earth’s crust meet, according to Reuters.

About 90% of the world’s earthquakes occur in that region, according to the US Geological Survey.

Last month, a 6.6-magnitude earthquake rocked the coast of the main Indonesian island of Java, damaging buildings and homes. During that earthquake, the capital Jakarta experienced high altitudes of more than 10 seconds.
