An earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale hit the western coast of Sumatra island on Friday, the country’s geophysics agency, BMKG, said, although there was no risk of a tsunami or immediate reports of major damage.

Witnesses said the quake, which hit the ground at a depth of 10 km (6.21 miles), was felt as far away as Singapore and Malaysia and strongly in the neighboring cities of Padang in West Sumatra province and Pekanbaru in Riau province.

“We are continuing to monitor and are advising people to stay alert,” Dwikorita Karnawati, president of the BMKG, told MetroTV.

“Because that’s on Earth, and the scale is above 6, we’re concerned that it could cause some damage.”

In Pasaman Barat, about 17 km from the epicenter, a witness said Metro TV patients in the hospital were evacuated from the building.

Indonesia’s disaster mitigation agency could not be reached for comment on the damage.

Alim Bazar, head of the disaster mitigation agency in the city of Basaman, near the epicenter, told AFP that some buildings had cracks.

“The mayor called and ordered that all the second and third floors of each building be evacuated,” he said.

Bazar said there had been reports of some injuries, but did not have details.

Irbanda, a Basaman resident who goes by one name like many Indonesians, told Metro TV that he felt the first and second tremors.

“Initially, the earthquake only lasted for a few seconds. People fled their homes and nearby buildings were swaying,” he said.

“But then another earthquake happened and it was very strong. More people fled their homes,” he said, adding that patients at a local hospital had been taken abroad.

Witnesses and police said tremors were felt in Singapore.

“Earthquakes were felt… which were felt in certain parts of Singapore at around 9:45 am,” police said in a statement.

The statement added that the police and emergency services “received several calls from the public reporting these tremors.”

The Malaysian Meteorological Department said in a tweet that the “vibrations” were felt in the western states of the peninsula.

“Vibrations were felt in the western peninsula region, especially in Selangor, Perak, Nigerian Sembilan, Malacca and Johor,” the ministry said in a tweet.

Indonesia experiences frequent earthquakes located on both sides of the so-called “Pacific Ring of Fire”, a highly seismically active region, where different plates meet on the Earth’s crust.

Last month, a 6.6-magnitude earthquake hit the island of Java, prompting some residents in the capital, Jakarta, to flee buildings in panic.

A 7.4 magnitude rise of 7.4 degrees in the Flores Sea has raised a tsunami warning in December, although it caused only minor damage.
