6.2-magnitude earthquake strikes Indonesia’s Sumatra island news | DW

A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck near the western coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra on Friday, killing at least seven people.

“We now have information that two people were killed and 20 others were injured,” Suhariyanto, head of the National Disaster Management Agency, told the media.

Many homes and other buildings were also damaged in the earthquake.

The authorities published pictures showing collapsed houses and a school in West Basaman with its roof open.

Officials said the quake also triggered a landslide that buried homes in West Pasaman.

No tsunami warning was issued.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the strong, shallow quake hit the northern islands at a depth of 12 kilometers (7.5 miles).

Residents said the quake came minutes after a 5.0-magnitude earthquake recorded by the US Geological Survey.

The quake was strongly felt in the neighboring cities of Padang in West Sumatra province and in Pekanbaru in Riau province.

The shocks were also felt by people as far afield as Malaysia and Singapore.

“Earthquakes were felt… which were felt in certain parts of Singapore at around 9:45 am,” a police statement said.

Police and emergency services said they had “received several calls from the public reporting these tremors.”

The Malaysian Meteorological Department said in a tweet that the “tremors” were felt by people in the western states of the peninsula.

“The vibrations were felt in the western peninsula region, especially in Selangor, Perak, Nigerian Sembilan, Malacca and Johor,” the department said.
