Two people were killed in a 6.2-magnitude earthquake on the Indonesian island of Sumatra

Padang (Indonesia) (AFP) – At least two people were killed when a 6.2-magnitude earthquake rocked the Indonesian island of Sumatra on Friday, with residents transporting loved ones to safety as buildings around them collapsed.

The earthquake came just minutes after a less violent earthquake as panicked residents began to evacuate their homes.

“We all fled our house (after the first earthquake),” Yudi Prama Agostino, 36, told AFP. “I have a one-year-old, so in a panic I pushed the stroller out of the house.”

The quake struck the north of the island at a depth of 12 kilometers (7.5 miles), about 70 kilometers from the town of Bukittinggi in West Sumatra province, according to the US Geological Survey.

The birthplace of Agustino is located in the Agam region, another 40 kilometers from Bukittinggi.

Augustino said of the first tremor, which was recorded at 5.0 by the USGS: “I noticed an earthquake caused by falling children’s toys. .

“As soon as we got out there was a 6.2-magnitude earthquake and everyone panicked,” he added.

Two people were killed and 20 injured in West Basaman – about 17 kilometers from the epicenter – according to the head of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) Suhariyanto, who like many Indonesians uses one name.

Indonesia’s meteorological agency has warned people to stay off the slopes for fear of landslides at the height of the rainy season.

The quake was felt in the neighboring provinces of Riau and North Sumatra and as far afield as Malaysia and Singapore. No tsunami warning was issued.

Pictures shared by AFP from the city of Basaman, near the epicenter, showed houses partially collapsed with bricks lying on the ground and holes in the walls.

Suhariyanto said the town’s mayor’s house was damaged with glass shattering all over the floor.

Television footage showed patients being wheeled out of a hospital in Padang, the capital of West Sumatra province.

Alim Bazar, head of the disaster mitigation agency in Basaman, told AFP that some buildings had cracks.

“The mayor called and ordered that all the second and third floors of each building be evacuated,” he said.

Irbanda, a Basaman resident, told Metro TV that he felt the first and second earthquakes.

“Initially, the earthquake only lasted for a few seconds. People fled their homes and nearby buildings were swaying,” he said.

“But then another earthquake happened and it was very strong. More people fled their homes,” he said, adding that patients at a local hospital had been taken abroad.

Tremors in Singapore and Malaysia

Witnesses and police said tremors were felt in Singapore.

“Earthquakes were felt… which were felt in certain parts of Singapore at around 9:45 am,” police said in a statement.

Police and emergency services “received several calls from the public reporting these tremors,” the police added.

A Singapore resident told AFP he felt a slight jolt in his home that made him dizzy, while state broadcaster CNA showed video of swaying ceiling lights in a high-rise apartment.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department said in a tweet that the “vibrations” were felt in the western states of the peninsula.

“Wow #earthquake in Kuala Lumpur,” one Twitter user wrote. “The building is swaying!!”

Indonesia is located on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, which has caused it to experience frequent earthquakes.

In 2004, a magnitude 9.1 earthquake hit the coast of Sumatra and triggered a tsunami that killed 220,000 people across the region, including about 170,000 people in Indonesia.
