KUALA LUMPUR, February 25 – The impact of the 6.1-magnitude earthquake that struck North Sumatra, Indonesia, today, has had little impact on Malaysia, said the Director-General of Malaysia’s Meteorological Department, Muhammad Hilmi Abdullah.

He said that the administration detected aftershocks after the strong earthquake. These aftershocks were detected by the Indonesian Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) as of 4.50 pm today, with a total of 27 times.

He said MetMalaysia will continue to monitor and report any developments in the event of aftershocks and seismic activities around the affected areas.

“So far, the information received shows minimal impact or effects of the earthquake on the country (Malaysia),” he said in a statement here today.

MetMalaysia said the quake was felt at 9.39 am at a depth of 10 km in western Peninsular Malaysia, namely Pahang, Putrajaya, Negeri Sembilan, Penang, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Johor.

At 12.02pm today, a 4.9-magnitude earthquake was recorded in the same area, although both earthquakes did not trigger a tsunami warning in Malaysia. – program
