Indonesian earthquake survivors need food, shelter and supplies

Indonesian rescue teams are still searching today for six people who may have been buried under a landslide after a devastating earthquake. The 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck the island of Sumatra yesterday morning, killing at least eight people. At least 86 others were injured, and 10 were considered serious. A statement issued by Indonesia’s National Disaster Mitigation Agency said that more than 6,000 people were evacuated from the island’s cities of Pasaman and West Pasaman.

A spokesperson for the agency said survivors need food, shelter and supplies.

“People affected by the earthquake urgently need tarpaulins, tents, immediate food, clean water and family supplies.”

West Basuman state authorities have declared a state of emergency for the next two weeks. An Indonesian meteorological agency is warning people to stay away from the slopes for fear of landslides at the height of the rainy season. In addition to the dead and wounded, hundreds of homes, mosques, schools and banks were damaged. Malaysia and Singapore felt some earthquakes.

The disaster mitigation agency said rescue workers were using heavy equipment to search for survivors under the rubble of buildings.
