Coronavirus, earthquakes, and Beethoven – Zagreb love you

June 5, 2020 – As we wrote on June 1, 2020, the Zagreb Initiative, I Love You (Zagreb, Take Imam Rad), which was enacted and organized by the Information Agency from Zagreb, opened with a panel discussion aimed at raising awareness of the need for a comprehensive restoration of many historical places Destroyed by a catastrophic earthquake in the midst of a coronavirus in March.

As the organizer announced, the second part of the event, and the very special part already, will take place in the hall of the Croatian Academy of Arts and Sciences (HAZU) tomorrow, Saturday 6 June 2020, at 20:00. Ludwig van Beethoven was born exactly 250 years ago. The world was preparing to celebrate one of the most brilliant authors of all time, but then … the coronavirus pandemic infiltrated. An earthquake shook his waist. All over the world, events and concerts had to be canceled in honor of the Great Teacher.

Soloists in Zagreb wanted to give their share of remembrance and adapt themselves to the situation in a unique way. Sreten Krstic, master of concert, composer and teacher of music, was primarily inspired by the epidemic restrictions, and for the first time known to us, he reorganized one of Beethoven’s most respected works and adapted them to the formation of the orchestra room. This is the version we will hear on Saturday evening.

The first four notes entered the famous opening “ta-ta-ta-taaa” that opened Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, most people authorized on Earth. When we listen to this glorious pillar of classical music, we enjoy harmony, rhythm, dynamics and musical colors often surprising for his distinctive arrangement, and we imagine what we feel or what we want as boundless music.

As fans of classical music, we rarely think about what inspired the author, what his true message and the true content of the particular piece were. Here are some hints to help us be more aware of what Beethoven was thinking, especially and separately, why his Fifth Symphony is so appropriate for this special evening, because it is special and important in more ways than one.

Another thing that everyone knows is that Beethoven started losing his reputation in his early years and that he ended his life completely deaf (although some evidence suggests he could hear low tones and sudden loud sounds until his last day). What a setback for my music!

In 1802, on the advice of his doctor, he moved to the small Austrian town of Heiligenstadt. In his letters to his brothers, he often cited increasing deafness and suicidal thoughts, but also his decision to continue living for his art and through him, how he had to “ grab a bit of a throat, surely it wouldn’t totally crush me ”.

This can be considered as a message of this symphony for everyone: do not kneel, fate fate. And for coronavirus and earthquakes we say: You cannot completely crush us!
