At least eight people were killed and 86 others injured when a 6.2-magnitude earthquake rocked Indonesia’s West Sumatra province on Friday, leaving homes under rubble and forcing thousands to leave their homes.

Of the injuries, 10 were classified as serious, according to the Indonesian Disaster Management Authority. About 6000 people took refuge in a shelter.

Some 430 homes, as well as schools and community buildings, were damaged, mostly in the Basaman and West Basaman districts, which were closest to the epicenter.

The 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck about 40 miles northwest of Bukittinggi, a mountainous town in West Sumatra province, according to the US Geological Survey. Its epicenter was about 7 miles deep.

Neighboring Singapore and Malaysia’s capital, Kuala Lumpur, was shaken.

Indonesia, a vast archipelago of 270 million people located on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, is no stranger to natural disasters. Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and tsunamis frequently hit the country.

A 6.2-magnitude earthquake in January 2021 killed at least 105 people and injured about 6,500 in the country’s West Sulawesi province, according to the Associated Press.

It is estimated that about 160,000 people died in Indonesia in the powerful 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami that swept through many countries.
