But the massive volcano fueling Yellowstone geothermal anger has been in “a major downturn” for some time, according to researchers at the University of Leicester and the University of California Santa Cruz. In their study published in geology, scientists announced the discovery of two newly identified super explosions along the path of Yellowstone hotspots, including what they call the largest and most disastrous volcano event.

“We discovered that sediments that were previously thought to belong to multiple and small eruptions were in fact massive sheets of volcanic material from two supernova explosions previously unknown about 9.0 and 8.7 million years ago,” said Thomas Nutt, volcanologist at Leicester University. And the main author of the newspaper. “The smallest of them, the Grays Landing super eruption, is now the largest recorded event in the entire Snake River-Yellowstone Volcano County. It is one of the five best eruptions of all time.”

The researchers concluded that six super explosions occurred during the Miocene Geological Age, a period that spanned from 23 to 5.3 million years ago, at a rate of once every 500,000 years.

Relatively speaking, over the past three million years, the Yellowstone Hotspot has experienced only two revolutions. “The Yellowstone hotspot appears to have experienced a triple decrease in its ability to produce super-eruptive events, and this is a very significant decrease,” Nout said.

“We have demonstrated that the frequency of the highest Yellowstone revolutions appears once every 1.5 million years,” Nout said. “The last super eruption occurred 630,000 years ago, which indicates that we may have up to 900,000 years before another eruption of this magnitude occurred.”

Soon Nott added that the figure of 900,000 years is only an estimate and that continuous monitoring by the US Geological Survey is “a must.”
